In my third grade ELA class, we will use the Macmillan McGraw-Hill Reading series and the Lucy Calkins units of study. We also will utilize trade books to enrich and enhance the reading curriculum. The Macmillan McGraw-Hill Reading Program incorporates listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, phonics and spelling skills into each unit of study. The Lucy Calkins units help students to build a reading life. A variety of graphic organizers will be used for writing in third grade. Some examples of graphic organizers that are commonly used in third grade are: 4-square, T- chart, Venn diagram, and the Herringbone. The Zaner-Bloser Handwriting is also incorporated for students to learn cursive handwriting.
